Welcome to Ridgewood Educational Services
One-on-one tutoring. Specializing in students with ADHD, ASD and Learning Disabilities
Ridgewood Educational Services is a one-on-one tutoring service for elementary school children. We offer regular tutoring sessions once a week, with support for regular schoolwork and/or Ridgewood practice exercises to be completed at home. We specialize in elementary school children with learning disabilities from grades four to eight. We can support homework completion, or we can provide a supplementary language and math program using direct, one-on-one instruction, depending on the needs of the child. Students learn transferable skills that will last a lifetime, and focus on preparatory skills for secondary school. Instruction is for one hour weekly, and is delivered by Mr. Anderson Dixon, OCT, a practicing certified teacher with over 25 years of experience in special education.
The Ridgewood Advantage
Ridgewood provides their students with an individualized, one-on-one program that targets the students’ specific needs. Ridgewood focuses on a balance of lifelong transferable skills, such as reading comprehension, vocabulary building, reading fluency, spelling, pencil and paper writing fluency, math calculations, math fluency, mental math, oral expression, and developing skills using technology. Once mastered, these skills will serve students throughout their entire academic careers, and their lives.
All materials, books, school supplies, technology and subscriptions to learning websites are included.
Mr. Anderson Dixon, OCT
Mr. Dixon is the sole instructor and assessor with Ridgewood Educational Services. Mr. Dixon has been working with York Region District School Board since 1991, and has been a practicing special education teacher for over 25 years. Currently, Mr. Dixon is a SERT (Special Education Resource Teacher). He operates a Student Support Centre for students with diagnoses in the junior and intermediate grades (grades four to eight). He has years of experience teaching students with learning disabilities, ADHD, ASD, ABI, FAS and other diagnoses with barriers to learning. Mr. Dixon understands the crucial role that one-on-one instruction plays in accelerating the learning of children experiencing difficulties in the regular classroom. He uses a variety of leading edge strategies, such as technology, to maintain their focus and develop their academic skills.
Why One-on-One Instruction?
Educators have long understood that one-on-one instruction is the most effective way of accelerating the learning of any student. Here are the top five reasons for one-on-one instruction:
Real Time Adjustment- The instructor can gauge the student’s mastery of a skill, psychological well-being, and mood on any particular day. The instructor will adjust the program for that student in real time accordingly.
Personalized Instruction- Learning goals, interactions and assignments are personalized to meet the specific strengths and needs of the student.
Learning Pace- Students can learn and advance at their own pace. Class will never go on without the student.
Students Feel Comfortable and Valued- The low stress environment of the Ridgewood classroom, with no grades or marks, frees students from the fear of failure. Ridgewood students have a voice in the classroom. Their thoughts, feelings and opinions are heard and valued by the instructor.
Focused Learning Time- The Ridgewood classroom is designed to be free of visual and auditory distractions. Students with attention difficulties are better able to focus on their learning. Lessons and exercises are designed to be engaging, rewarding, and occasionally… even fun!
How Does it Work?
Parents will participate in an intake meeting with Mr. Dixon. The student may attend this meeting, depending on the wishes of the parents. The nature of the academic difficulties are discussed. Parents are encouraged to bring in and share any relevant information with Mr. Dixon, such as recent report cards, educational assessments, reports from a psychologist, speech and language therapist or occupational therapist, or any notes from the family doctor. Then the student meets with Mr. Dixon for a norm-based academic screen, which may take a number of sessions. The results of the academic screen are shared with parents. Parents will learn the specific age-equivalency scores and grade level achievement of their child in several key areas, such as vocabulary, spelling, and math calculations. Using all of this data, parents, Mr. Dixon and the child develop an individualized learning plan together. This plan is designed to accelerate the child’s learning in key transferable skills from the Ridgewood Educational Services Learning Menu. Then regular classroom sessions will begin for one hour at a time on a weekly basis.
